i went for my scan today but they told me they couldn't scan me till friday as there was no consultants available to scan me (i need a detailed scan as my first born daughter had internal problems which wasn't picked up on her scan) what i want to know is, what do they look at on a detailed scan that they don't check on a normal one? shouldn't all scans be detailed?

I have had 2 Level 2 ultrasounds during my pregnancy so far. This scan can take 30 minutes or more. The technican measured the arm and leg bones, measured the size of the skull and checked for fluid around the brain, checked each chamber of the heart. I can't remember everything, but I do recall watching the babies swallow amniotic fluid and it go into their tummies. Regular ultrasounds are mostly measuring the length of the baby, checking position, and visualizing the heartbeat.

No, not all scans should be detailed.

If you have a history of at-risk pregnancies, or a history of problems with other children, then the detailed scan is necessary to be safe.

Otherwise, it would be an additional, and unneccesary expense to the mothers/insurance companies.

In fact, a lot of insurance companies won't cover the scan UNLESS there is a medical reason for it.

An ultrasound tech is trained to take measurements of major bone structures, organs and blood flow. A detailed scan measures smaller structures within the body and organs, and a regualr tech is likely not trained to be able to identify them. Since they are not preformed as often its not surprising that they are not available every day. Good luck to you and your baby!

I just had a level 2 this morning. And they measured the bones, space between the eyes, brain, head and did an echo on his heart. And I had a regular one last week and they just checked the spine and the heart.
