There was a recent poll of NHL GM's that asked if they could start their franchise with one player besides Sidney Crosby (says volumes in itself because the fact that they don't even include him), who would it be?
26 GM's responded.

I will get to the results after, what would YOUR choice be?

If you already saw results of the poll, please don't ruin it for others. Play nice.

Wow. According to these answers, there are a bunch of dummies in GM positions.

Here are the actual GM tallies

Luongo 16
Ovechkin 2
Lecavalier 2
Neidermayer, Malkin, Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, Lundqvist and Getlaf with one each.

CME- When deciding for myself, Phaneuf crossed my mind as well. Between him Ovechkin and Luongo. I decided upon Luongo.

How about that? Two Pens got votes, neither of them named Crosby.

Mike, fantasy doesn't mock reality though. Look at football for instance, RB is the most dominant position. Actually, in fantasy hockey, goalies usually are less scoring categories than skaters so I don't always agree.

Roberto Luongo. You have to start with a foundation in goal and besides, great goalies come once or twice in a generation.

I'm in Vancouver and Luongo is great BUT you do not need a "great" goalie to win a Cup. You just need a hot one. With goals so hard to come by, you have to figure other than Crosby, I'd go Ovechkin to build a team around.

Mats Sundin, Because of all the same reasons mat picked Jarome iginla.

He a leader,

Doesnt want a ton of money (Even though hes making it)

and he stays with the team because he wants to, and he would like to win a cup but he doesnt want to leave the leafs cause their his team, so in a nutshell, hes not Ray Borque. wait borque is the player who ditched boston to go win a cup with like colorado or something isnt he?

But if i couldnt choose mats, it would Be Thornton, HANDS DOWN. i dont know how he didnt get the most votes, this is a guy that anyone should wanna build a franchise around, hes perfect.

This might seem odd at first, but I'd start with Calgary defenseman, Dion Phaneuf. He could set the tone for a hybrid team of NJ Devils and Broad St. Bullies. Might seem odd at second glace too, but that's what you get when you try to ask a reasonable question to a guy like cme.

a million. request automatic Icing. 2. supply up changing the sport.( no longer adequate targets / "improve the dimensions of the internet" ) (Too many targets / "improve the dimensions of the goalie kit".) If it have been Basketball / they could be changing the dimensions of the ring - making the ring/ larger /decrease. Hockey is meant to be a collection game. Shoot out's. "if a game winner is to be desperate by using a shoot out, it somewhat is the way that game would desire to be performed. they'd desire to start a sparkling "SHOOT OUT LEAGUE" 2 or 3 goalies and approximately 5 or 6 shooters for each group. they're working Hockey too very like a corporation, they'd desire to start to run it like a game. Boy this is a great question.

It's hard to not say Joe Thornton after his great year last year...but if I were to start a team I would grab Nick Lidstrom in Detroit first. He is the best defenseman, and probably the third best player behind only Gretzky and Lemieux, that I've ever seen play (and I've been a fan since the late 70s).

Nick is also a great leader. I think he still has 3-4 years of top-quality play in him and I believe he'll bring home a few more Norris Trophies in the next few years.

In my opinion the most important player to the Wings during their cup runs was Lidstrom, no offense to Stevie Y fans.

I'd definitely pick Luongo, but I'd try to do a better job of building around him than the Panthers, lol. I can't believe so many people said Iginla! Always have to start in goal, that's what I've been preaching in my fantasy answers. If I had second pick in a fantasy draft, I'd definitely take Luongo.

Wait wait wait, someone said Getzlaf???????? Are you kidding me????? LMAO!!!! Ryan Getzlaf??? Oh man, that's too funny.

Lecavalier (with honorable mention to Iginla).

Need toughness, skill and leadership ability as well as the ability to make the players around you better. Iginla is lacking in the final category in my opinion whereas the Lightning sink or swim based on how well Lecavalier does. Elevates his game when it matters most as well.

Call me a CBJ a**-kisser, but I'd take Rick Nash.

He very obviously can score (assuming that the whole freakin' team isn't sucking rat), he's a big guy and based on what I saw last year he'll actually hit somebody now (never mind the fact that the only time that happened was when he got hit in an unmentionable area by Christian Erhoff on the Sharks... Apparently since Germans can't win wars, they'll try to make it so North Americans can't reproduce.... Kidding, kidding!), he's not a puckhog like people think and he's been playing better defensively since Hitchcock took over last year.

And if I couldn't take him, I'd take Freddy Norrena. Best Jackets goalie ever... Not that that's saying too much.
