No offense intended, but this was something that crossed my mind. Particularly on guys, I can't help but wonder, should overweight men even bother trying to be "stylish"? Or does that even further emphasize their overweight appearance? For example, should an overweight guy just stick to more plain clothes, haircuts, and beard styles, or is it just as "fashionable" to try and spice it up a bit?

Truth be told, I'm more referring to myself. I tend to put a lot of work into my appearance, but the past few days I've been wondering if I should try to keep it low=profile until I've lost the weight? I can't help but feel like it may look vaguely "pathetic" trying to emulate the kind of styles seem on in-shape guys.

Anyways, again, didn't mean to offend anyone with the title; I just wanted to grab some attention in order to get an answer for my own question. Thanks in advance :)

Just because you might be a little overweight doesn't mean you still can't look good! If putting work into your appearance makes you feel good, then by all means, keep doing it! Nothing says that just because you're overweight you have to try to look plain and stay in the shadows. I personally think that someone who puts some work into their appearance, no matter what their weight, always looks better than someone who looks very plain because the plain people, to me anyway, seem not to care how they look. So in my opinion, do whatever makes you feel good, don't worry what other people think!

You should definitely try and be stylish. The key is to go for styles that are more slimming. For example, if you wear a suit to work, go with a pinstripe as opposed to a houndsooth. The vertical stripes are slimming and will make you look taller. Also, many times when people put on some weight they tend to start buying clothes that are too big for them, fit is a huge part of looking good. Be sure that your shirts aren't too wide (see how much extra material you have by grabbing under your arm along your chest, you shouldn't have more than a couple of inches of give.

Ya got me attention sonny!Bloody hell you're right you should try and improve on your appearance no matter what you look like. Ever see the photos of the supposed supermodels at the end of a night of partying??Tis bad stuff!!

Even us slimmer girls, and I use the term usely as i'm no longer the slimmest after two kids, but i try to look my best everyday. Not only can you hide the extra few inches but when people comment that you look well, it's worth more than all the plastic surgery in the country. If you take pride in your appearance, feel good about yourself, this will make you ooze confidence, whether you have it or not.

This my boy is the secret to attracting the fairer sex. A strong confident man who makes you laugh is better than a fake tanned empty vessel anyday, well that's what I think anyway. Keep up the good work, it'll pay off in the end. Nic

It can actually slenderize them, if they choose a style that's appropriate for their size and shape. They don't have to be plain with ordinary clothes and haircuts, in fact this would draw attention to their weight because their clothes and everything else are just basic so the eye naturally draws it attention to something that stands out more.

If you're trying to do this for yourself, you can. Business attire is an easy way to start. Pinstripes, more so the very thin ones, help to elongate your body which can help make you look thinner. Darker colors also help. It doesn't have to be black. A dark brown, dark blue/navy or dark gray will work just fine. Suits, jackets and shirts that are more tailored and have some shape in them (but make sure they are your size) will help to give your body a "fit" look. Pants that are regular or even boot cut, more so jeans, help to slim out your legs. Just make sure they do no taper at the ankle. Even on a thin person this can make them look a little rotund.

Attitudes like that is a form of prejudism. I have never figured out why being prejudiced against "overweight" people is okay or funny but being prejudiced against anyone else is a big no-no.

Anyway...You have a right to be stylish at any size. Don't try to be in the shadows. Be stylish. Be you. If you dress stylish, you usually feel better about yourself. You have every right in the world to hold your head high and dress well.

(((hugs)))

I'm overweight too but I think of myself as stylish. Style isn't about size. Yeah it's more difficult to find great looking clothes for plus size people but work with what you're given. There are plenty of great styled big people. So don't worry and keep trying to achive the style you want.

I think all people can be stylish. It doesn't matter how much the weigh or how tall they are or what color their hair is.

As for "should".....I think stylish is very subjective. Every person has their own opinion about what looks good.

If you think you look pathetic, that's the vibe your putting out and people will see that.

Here's what I think, every person should feel good about themselves. Dress to impress yourself. When you go shopping, either take someone you really trust to give you an honest opinion or go alone. Take your time and don't get discouraged.

I CAN PERSONALLY GIVE YOU MY TWO CENTS ON THIS BECAUSE I MYSELF WAS AND STILL AM OVERWEIGHT NOT AS MUCH AS BEFORE BUT I AM STILL. I CAN TELL YOU THAT IF YOU DO ALL THIS AND YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH YOURSELF IT SHOULDN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE STYLISH OR NOT YOU DO THIS FOR YOURSELF AND DO IT BECAUSE YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF. IF YOU RATHER WEAR PLAIN CLOTHES AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT THEN YOU MAY HAVE A SELF ESTEEM ISSUE DO NOT WAIT TILL YOU LOSE SOME WEIGHT YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE. DON'T WORRY ABOUT KEEPING UP WITH THE STYLE GAME YOU DRESS TO IMPRESS YOURSELF MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER SO WHAT IF YOU'RE A LITTLE OVER WEIGHT OR A LOT BE COMFORTABLE WITH YOU AND IF YOU'RE NOT THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND WORKOUT AND EAT RIGHT.

My question to you would be why not? I'm not over weight but I see nothing wrong with overweight people being stylish... should they not dress nice until they meet society standards of what a normal weight should be?? I think everyone should look their best no matter what weight they are! With that said always strive to live/be healthy!
