It's a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
The objective of Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is to transfer mail reliably and efficiently.

SMTP is independent of the particular transmission subsystem and requires only a reliable ordered data stream channel. Appendices A, B, C, and D describe the use of SMTP with various transport services. A Glossary provides the definitions of terms as used in this document.

An important feature of SMTP is its capability to relay mail across transport service environments.

RFC 821 are standards to be followed for email ID's.
There are inbuilt checks available in API's to check for the proper formatting for the email id's.
e.g. it can automatically check for @ in the mail id, and that you do not have any special characters in your mail id etc.

You can get scripts (javaScript) and Java Code, also Regular Expressions for checking compliance with RFC 821 standards!

Hope that answers!
