I was very disappointed to hear from him that he thinks the Lakers have a good team but his expectations are not very high. Here he is... the GM of the Lakers who did NOTHING during the off-season to make the team a title contender again!

Mitch Kupchak sucks! He really did nothing this off-season- and from "Kobe-Gate" we know all the potential deals that he blew- not to mention all the players he has missed over the years with the draft.

No true LA fan is fooled to think that the Laker management really believes that we have the pieces to contend for a championship here! Being a laker fan is about winning rings- not making the playoffs and getting bounced in the 1st round.

How can you even be the GM of the Lakers and not have an expectation of winning a title?

He has made some very bad deals- Caron Butler for Kwame Brown (cake in our face man...)

The guy sucks (i know he's not the only one to blame: Jerry and Jim Buss)... but Mitch must go! He sucks!!!

The only signifigant thing the Lakers did was sign Derek Fisher- who fell into their laps (no work of Mitch). Where's the big deal that was promised to the fans. Signing Elton Brown and Cobe Karl??? Wasting two of our three draft choices- Sun who? Marc Gasol? Crittenton is pretty good- but beyond that - seriously what has been done to better our team- especially after Kobe's out-cry (he didn't handle it well- but he basically said what all the fans feel- we are the Lakers man-- we should be contending for titles- and we need the personnel to do it- and that's the GM's dang job!!

Are you really curious or are you looking for people to agree with you?

When you ask a question like this, of course you're going to get lazy pessimists who will rate Kupchak as a "1"or "2". Truth is no GM is that bad. the 3s and 4s get fired. As a lifetime Laker fan, I'd rate Mitch a "5". As a frame of reference, I rate Jerry West a "7". Are the Memphis Grizzlies better off today than they were five years ago? For the praise West gets, he really wasn't a genius when it came to the draft:
Anthony Peeler
George Lynch
Frankie King?
Sam Jacobson
Duvean George
Mark Madsen
Kareem Rush

No, Jerry's greatness was in his clout around the league and his powers of persuasion; the ability to get other GMs to make deals that were NOT in their best interests. Ironically, the current Laker management is paying the price for that legacy. As a result, LA can't make a trade unless the other GM feels he's ripping the Lakers off (Jermaine O'Neal anyone?).

That's not to excuse Mitch Kupchak. He and his staff are behind the curve when it comes to international scouting, he's not very creative, he carries very little cache amongst his peers, and he's so circumspect that listening to him talk is like listening to someone trying to difuse a bomb.

But people, be fair. At his level, Mitch didn't sign off on the Shaq deal, Jerry Buss did. Mitch ended up having make a crappy trade because Kobe wouldn't re-sign until the deal was completed; robbing the Lakers of leverage. Yes, hold him accountable for the Caron Butler/Kwame Brown trade. But remember, he had a deal for Carlos Boozer in place until word got out and Utah backed off. Jerry's son, Jim Buss nixed the Jason Kidd trade, because he's enamored with Andrew Bynum. If you REALLY believe Kevin McHale was gonna give KG to the Lakers, then you believe in the Tooth Fairly. News flash, Jermaine O'Neal for Odom, Bynum and Brown doesn't make the Lakers better.

Of course, don't let logic, common sense and facts get in the way of a good rant.

He is a below average GM, particularly when compared to Jerry West.

He was instrumental in getting rid of Shaq, and they did not get equal value for the trade.

Jerry West would have convinced Shaq to stay, because the Lakers still had one more championship in the Shaq/Kobe combination.

The biggest problem with the Lakers is with the owner Jerry Buss, he and his sons make bad decisions. They were instrumental in Jerry West and Shaq leaving.

It will probably take new ownership before the Lakers compete for another championship. It will not happen during the Kobe Bryant era.

He has done a terrific job destroying a great Laker team! I will give him a 10 because I like the seeing the Lakers suck so much after all the rigged games they won with Kobe Bryant. The refs get busted and Lakers get busted. Jusice somewhat prevails!

On a 1 to 10 scale hes a one ..How could you have a good team and not have high expectations, that's like saying I have a fast car but I don't want to drive over Forty..I'm a Laker fan but he is just bringing the same team back plus a couple of rookies and D-Fish, I like D-Fish but hes the same guy they didn't want to throw big dollars at a couple of years ago cuz he was to small to guard big point guards and to slow to guard tony parker and steve nash..

I agree with you. I wish they would get rid of him. I think him more then anyone has caused the internal problems with the Lakers and has done nothing to make it a contender. You would think Mr. Buss would see it. Oh, I wish Jerry West would somehow come back.

On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd say he gets a 2. They have salary cap issues, Kobe is unhappy and the supporting cast gets injured way too frequently.

He also helped in getting rid of Shaq and the team really can't attract alot of big-time players, because they would have to defer to Kobe and sacrifice too much of their own abilities to make it work.

mitch kupchak is f**king useless. He barely did anything this summer for the lakers. Derek Fisher deal was only because derek fisher needed to be near his daughter and the other deal he made with *i forgot who* was such a rip.
