No it does not shorten the life of any computer. It may actually extend the life. When reformatting you will be getting ride of any hidden programs or tasks your computer is doing with out your knowledge. Your computer will not be forced to run as many things so it will run cooler and longer. The more things your computer is trying to do at one time the hotter it runs and Heat is the enemy of most parts on a computer.

no. when your laptop is always plugged in with the battery in it and the battery is @ 100% power, it shortens your battery life. if your laptop is always on and overheats, it shortens almost all of your hardware's life. if your processor and graphics card are overclocked (meaning they are configured to work much faster than what they really do i.e. AMD Turion 64x2 mobile Processor running @ 2.0ghz but the default speed is 1.73ghz), it shortens and burns your processor and graphics card. ifi you dont turn on your screen saver and your monitor is just turned on without you touching the mouspad, it burns your LCD. thats it.
