You need to specify a speed and then just invert it. If you can run 15 miles per hour, for example, then that means you run 15 miles in 60 minutes.

Inverting you get 60 minutes / 15 miles. Reducing you get 4 minutes / mile.

Let's take another example of 10 miles per hour.

10 mph = 10 miles / 60 minutes

60 minutes / 10 miles = 6 minutes / 1 mile = 6 minutes

Let's try a "messy" example with 13 miles per hour: First invert:

1 hour
----------
13 miles

Multiply by 60 minutes / hours
1 hour ....... 60 minutes ... 60 minutes
------------ x ---------------- = ----------------
13 miles ..... 1 hour .......... 13 miles

Now reduce this fraction:
60 / 13 = 4 8/13

So you know it is more than 4 minutes but less than 5. It is 4 minutes and 8/13 of a minute. Convert this into seconds by multiplying by 60:

8 ................... 60 seconds .. 480 seconds
--- minutes x ----------------- = ------------------
13 .................. 1 minute ........... 13

480 / 13 = 36.923...

You might as well round this to 37 seconds:

So the answer for 13 miles / hour is:
4 minutes 37 seconds

Does that make sense?

Of course I run closer to 5 miles / hour... so that would be 12 minutes per mile. How about you?
