I am Hispanic, my wife just arrive in the USA. ESL classes are very hard to come by, I am finding out that lot of these private business are just there for the mighty dollar, they will only teach you to certain level and them stop or slowdown cause you might be learning to fast. these school are trying to keep you there for the long haul, it is 50 dollar a week for these course, many people get frustrate, my wife felt she was not advancing,, The State ESL course here in New Jersey have a few opening for ESL learning, they put you on a waiting list and since this is the state you never know when you are getting a call. Honestly i am finding out that there is no system to teach English, it is a big business, i also agree that having so many services, tv, and special interest group does not help at all either. College are not offering ESL for beginner either, you take a test which is really hard for newcomer. They are basically set up to not learn the language.

Sadly because of the fact the hispanic community is so damn large they do not actually need to learn english. Many states now have laws where any documents MUST be printed in English and Spanish. As a result the people have no motivation to learn a new language when they can communicate with a large population that already speaks spanish and then on top of that when businesses and government agencies cater to them its easier to just keep doing what you are doing.

English is a difficult language to learn. I can understand the frustration. However it is important to learn the language of a country if that is where you intend to live. It is rude and arrogant to expect people in another country to speak your native tongue. Of course not all hispanics are this way, however it certainly does seem to become an increasingly popular trend among hispanics. I think part of it has to do with the tolerance of illegal immigration in America. It teaches new people in the country that we do not respect our laws, and that we will cater to the wants and needs of immigrants and our own citizens who are nonwhite.

To be fair, maybe they don't have language skills enough to learn a second language. Some people can hardly handle one. It is not always as simple as it seems. I have a great neighbor who speaks no English, rest of his family does. I am fairly sure he is not good with the 2nd language concept.

QUE!?!??!?! jk.... yeah thats pretty messed up. i think its because they are narrow minded, and they dont feel the need to excell in anything else... they say you cant teach an old dog new tricks... so go ahead, show them your a better person you young buck!!! learn spanish... in the end, it might be more helpful for you to learn spanish and become a bilingual speaking person...that way youll know if they are talking **** about you! LOL i know being bilingual helps me out alot... spanish was my first language...with the wonderful tool of Television, and 1st grade learning...i learned english...and here i am :)
i also think its hard for them to learn english because all they speak is spanish to eachother, and they might feel stupid talking a language they dont even know how to pronounce properly. they might catch some heat from thier peers too... because as we all know....when one mexican person tries to better himself or herself... his or her own family will be the first to critisize and make fun of that person...

well to be fair i think the reason they want you to learn spanish is because you married thier son etc. and to be fair my parents are both immigrant who didn't speak a word of english when they came to the states my mother is now a college graduate and my father owns a real estate business so i don't think it's fair that you categorize every one each situation varies from case to case

They don't bother to learn the language because there will always be some special interest group that will pander to them.
And to the giant brained individual above who said the Spanish were here first: How many words of Navaho do you know?

First off, you speak English which is the language of Great Britain, so get off your high horse and learn the language of your people. Spanish people were here longer than the English.
