I have a Linksys Wireless Router that connects directly to the desktop, I have a laptop that automatically picked up the wireless signal, now I want to encrypt my signal so no one else can use it besides my laptop.

I tired to set up a a network between these to computers and also could not do that. Keep telling that it couldn't be established and to try again in a different setting.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

You need to look for the security settings on the linksys router. There are various "protocols" used to encrypt the wireless signal. This applies only to the wireless signal between the laptop and the linksys router.

You should look for something called WEP. (wireless encryption protocol). The router may support different variations of WEP - there are multiple versions of it.

Basically what you do is turn on WEP, then you need to configure a seed "key" that is use by WEP to generate an encryption key.

Your seed key is something that is only known to you and usually some short phrase - i.e. "smile4me". You enter this seed value in both the router and on the wireless nic wep set up. Once you do this, only wireless devices that have your seed phrase will be able to connect to your wireless router.

Go to the Linksys website. Download the user manual for your model. Pay attention to Chapter 2 about security. Very easy to implement.
