No, we never had to save on clothes and footwear. And I wasn't brought up barefoot. I was free to wear anything I wanted indoors and in the yard (usually I went barefoot or sock-footed, btw, even indoors I wore my socks out very quickly, my mom just bought new socks when that happened, we could easily afford that). But in public, I always wore shoes, as did everyone else I knew. It wasn't that my parents had to remind me or tell me to wear shoes; because I had never seen anyone barefoot on the sidewalk or in a store, the very idea didn't occur to me until I first heard of people going barefoot apart from home/yard/pool when I was almost 29.
(barefoot ever since, but that's another story)

I remember getting one pair of Keds that had to last the whole summer. Playing outside a lot wore them down pretty fast. We still used to love to go barefoot a lot though feeling the grass on our feet and even the hot pavement...that's what summer was all about...

No, quite the opposite. My mom would try to gently persuade me to put on shoes and I refused every time!

I loved being barefoot! All of us kids practically lived in our bathing suits too! ahhhh childhood......

Not to save money, but just to experience the joy of feeling the grass between your toes.
