So what songs are like caffeine for you, and are guaranteed to wake you up?

Hey, Rachel! Gotta love the ELO... :)

Dani G & lovnrckets - I've heard so much about MSI around here, that I will be putting them on the "to buy" list.

Along with jmike's suggestion of The Answer and Prof's suggestion of Apollo Sunshine, of course. :)

Prof - Fugazi! I only have Red Medicine here, but there are definitely some mellow moments there.

You can either listen to the kind of music you HATE MOST at a volume that can make you deaf, or you can try to get up and do some exercise ... although I don't recommend this for people doing homework, if you have a job and are falling asleep there, or are not in a class where you CAN NOT get up ... get up, and take a BRISK (slightly fast) walk around the block or even around the house or apartment. Swing your arms and your legs, stretch ... do anything to get your blood moving and your heart rate up, and you'll wake up and be able to pay better attention to what you are doing. The music would 'wake you up' but if it's something you like to hear, you'll want to concentrate on listening to it, and if it's something you hate it will still distract your mind ... so a little 'exercise break' is the best 'short term' fix.
You are also falling asleep at your desk for a reason ... if you 'lack energy' then you can have a 'small snack' (one bite (the size of a Hershey Kiss) of DARK chocolate and a serving of fresh fruit to BOOST your energy. If you didn't 'sleep well' at night, then you must try to 'fix' that ... get a good routine going, get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, and if that doesn't help you to wake up, you'll need to 'do some research' to find out WHY you get sleepy (which should be at the same time during the day every day) and fix that ... go on a diet/exercise routine, see a sleep disorder specialist, etc. There is a GOOD REASON you get sleepy, and it's usually a 'simple fix,' but you may need to do some research to find out what is wrong ... so 'music' to keep you awake is NOT the BEST idea ... try exercise, try a snack, and DO YOUR RESEARCH. THEN you can 'truly fix what's wrong' and not just use a 'crutch' to keep you from falling asleep.

I'd probably go to Fugazi (or I've been really into the All Systems Go Vol. 1 cd by Rocket From the Crypt lately) personally. It's interesting enough and up tempo enough, and I have my own office with a closing door so if I don't listen too loud I won't disturb anybody. Although, in an office setting, I've found something like Belle and Sebastian is more office friendly. Maybe the "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" cd It's light and easy, but interesting.

**********************
I was bummed, I actually put additional stuff on here yesterday, at a much more sensicle time, but it was slightly lengthy and at the time I just didn't have the heart to type the whole thing over again.
The long and short was. I do have sympathy for others in the office, but only because I was the only one in an office who didn't like Evanescence and in trying to be nice and keep my mouth shut I had to listen to that first single of theirs about 50 times. It's the only time in my life that I was relieved to go back to the pop radio station where they played the same cycle of 10-11 songs over and over again all day, but at the same time it is pretty awesome to subject your office mates to really weird stuff. I used to play Tom Waits' The Black Rider in the filing room and I got some really weird looks. Great picks on the Rocket songs. I think my favorites would be Killy Kill (both versions, but moreso Killy Kill Again), and Glazed. On a Rope is a great choice too. That tune totally rocks.

It's been quite a while since I've done Red Medicine front to back. I really need to do that again soon.

Dani totally stole my answer. MSI will do more than just wake you up. It's better than any energy drink you can think of. Go to iTunes and look for these songs. Fully guaranteed to revive and rejuvenate.

Bring The Pain
Diabolical
B**ches
Kill the Rock
Masturbates
Shut Me Up
Stupid MF

Prof - Always go office un-friendly! Nothing says love quite like torturing your fellow workers with anything loud or abrasive. RFTC is another awesome choice. My favorites include Hippy Dippy Do, Dollar, and of course On A Rope.

Sylvia - You are cordially invited to work in my office anytime, great choices!

The Clash or the Ramones help pep me up. We're stuck with muzak at work, but on a good day I will get to hear Rock the Casbah, Should I Stay or Should I Go, or Rock 'N' Roll High School. Someone briefly switched it to the elevator music station a couple of weeks ago and it was getting close to mutiny!

Hmm...

Vision Thing by Sisters of Mercy - I've never done cocaine in my life, but I imagine this song to be the musical equivalent for reasons I can't quite explain. :)

Anything at all by Lords of Acid - not really office-friendly, but there's something about the music that makes you want to move.

Brute - KMFDM - makes me feel invicible and ready to go!

Shock to the System - Billy Idol

Other notable songs for me -
Whatever - Godsmack
Unsung - Helmet
Thieves - Ministry

Wow. Based on what I picked, I'm hoping you have a door you can close. Or headphones for your iPod.

If you're looking for something a little lighter -
The Gorillaz's Feel Good Inc always gets me doing a little chair dance.
So does that Ok Go song...

And at risk of REALLY REALLY embarrassing myself, here are two less-cool songs that can also inpire the "chair dance" at my desk:
SexyBack - Justin Timberlake
Yeah - Usher et al.

***
Edit: Thought of two more that are noisy enough to keep you awake - "Violet" by Hole (really, the only song I like by Hole) and "Townshp Rebellion" by Rage Against the Machine.

Try some Godsmack or System of a Down or some club music like La Bouche, Haddaway, or Ace of Base

The first Metallica album. If "Whiplash" and "Seek and Destroy" don't get you moving, not much of anything will. Iron Maiden also works for me, as well as the Slave to the Grind album from Skid Row.

NP: "All My Girlfriends Have Boyfriends" - Starwood

"Here We Go" by Bouncing Souls has a definite 'move yer a$$' feel to it...

Just about anything by Jon Spencer Blues Explosion!

I also find that The Futureheads self titled release is effective at providing the caffeine jolt that one needs : )
