I know it should be done every 6k miles but i've never done it.

is this bad? When the front tires have no thread left i just put the rear ones to the front and buy 2 new ones for the rear.

It is neccessary to keep the tires all wearing evenly, the front tires are subject to cast and camber which is the tire being aligned with the frame of the car front to back so to speak, also it subject to toe in and toe out which is how the tire sits in an upright position, ie if the tire is leaning in or out from top to bottom. also when rotating the tires they should be balanced. one more thought, when you purchase new tires alot of places will offer free tire rotation which they deem neccessary so as to not void the tire warranty. as to your follow up question yes you would want to put the rears to the front and get new rears, however you really should get all tires balanced and have a four wheel alignment to ensure you get the maximun use of all the tires.

The object of rotating tires is to milk as much ware evenly of all the tires before they need to be replaced. It's a nasty time consuming job unless you have jack-stands and a hydraulic floor jack and an breaker bar with a 19 mm deep well socket.

Follow the car manufactures recommendation for the correct pattern of rotation because they do differ.

Tire rotation will give you much better tire wear for a longer time and while the tires are off have them balanced as well. You will be surprised at how long a set of tires will last. The proper interval is usually every other oil change.

That's what I do too. That way you always have good tread on your drive wheels. Buy Michelin at Sams. They're worth the money and will save your life or a fellow motorist's life on a rainy day skid with good rubber on all four wheels.

The tires will last longer and wear evenly if you rotate them. Its always best to have 4 good tires.
