Hold down ALT and press numbers on the number pad:

ALT+3 = ♥
ALT+156 = £
ALT+0752 = ð

Lookup Alt Codes for the key sequences to make the characters. For example, 248 would make this character

°

168 = ¿
649 = ë

Use the alt key and the number pad (not the numbers at the top of the keyboard) and just experiment or find a site that has a list.

Go to Start menu> Accessories>System Tools> and the Click on character map. Now where ever you type you can copy the symbols and shapes and hearts and all sorts of shapes in to your text just copy the symbol from the character map window and the paste it in your text. Hope it helped
