I'm not an expert, but I have been told by a sleepologist that any noise or light can cause you to sleep lighter and disrupt REM. I've also heard that your subconscious is more open to suggestion during certain phases of sleep. I have been known to listed to affirmation tapes while falling asleep. This way I can take advantage of my open subconscious, but I also know that when the tape ends, it will turn off, allowing me to have silence for the rest of the night.
