I was induced with my first pregnancy due to PIH. It was not a good experience, the labor was long and the contractions were very hard and close together for a very long time. This is what Pitocin does, it makes contractions more effective-the result- harder contractions, more pain. If you go to the hospital this is the drug of choice for most physicians and will most likely what they will use to help things move along. My advice is to wait it out, your body will soon go into real labor on it's own and it will be much easier than going in now and getting Pitocin. I was in early labor with light contractions that were about 4 minutes apart so we went in to the hospital and was given the option of being hooked up to IV Pitocin or going home and waiting it out as I was only 2 cm dilated and I decided to go back home. The "early labor" contractions decreased until they were no longer there and everything was back to normal, so my baby wasn't ready to be born that day. Exactly a week after my "early labor" my water broke on it's own at home at 9 pm and strong contractions started about 10 minutes after that, we went to the hospital and my daughter was born at 5 am the next morning (2 1/2 hrs of pushing-she was in the wrong position). The labor was much easier without the Pitocin! Whatever you decide I wish you luck!

I had to be induced twice. I had my middle kid without induction.
IMHO, you should DEFINITELY avoid induction at all costs. Don't ask for it. If it's medically necessary, you're stuck with it and you have to make sure they are monitoring you correctly and not over-pumping you with pitocin. That's what happened to me with my last child, and by the time I had her, I was shaking so violently, I couldn't even hold my own baby. Plus I have had health problems ever since, which I can only explain as being a side-effect from too much pitocin. (My nurse wasn't listening to me and my dr. was out of town, so that's why I got too much.)
Hang in there -- You'll meet your baby soon enough without having to go through a very painful induction that isn't medically necessary.

I believe they will definitely consider inducing but it is up to your doctor. You will be admitted, they will monitor you and usually if nothing improves w/in twelve hours or so they will probably start a pitosin(petosin?) drip (stuff they gave me) to help things along. My daughter technically started on the Saturday before but was born the Tuesday after because I did not dilate enough fast enough. (I knew nothing and didn't call the doctor till Monday - thought he was not available on weekends - duh!)
Oh, and the walking recommended by another poster is definitely true!! I was walking around Disneyland and the mall in the weekend before my daughter was born. They actually recommend it at the hospital if things are not progressing.

Your doctor gets to decide when and if you are induced. If you show up to the hospital not in active labor they will likely send you home or call your doctor for advice, they don't just do it. Go out and walk, call your doctor and beg but going to the hospital early will likely do no good. Sorry.

They wouldn't induce my best friend. The doctor wanted her body to do it. However, on the other hand I am getting induced at 39 weeks, if she stays in that long. It really depends on your doctor. Call them and ask if they will let you come in for an induction.
