I prefer Dell, i think you can get more for your money. I bought one about 9 mos. ago. I love it. Personally I do not like HP, had too many problems with them.

I strongly recommend (from past experience) that you steer clear of HP laptops. They have a history of buying cheap parts and having problems later because of the cheap parts.
HP also loads down all of their computers with a whole bunch of useless junk that they get paid to pre-install on your computer.
If you are looking for a good laptop, which laptops will be good for you really depends on exactly what you will be doing with it.
As far as brandnames go I would recommend (in this order...)
1. Toshiba
2. Dell
3. Sony
Also if you feel comfortable with learning a different operating system and you can afford something in the $1200 and up range, you should definately look at Macbooks. the Mac OS has come a long way, and you can actually run Windows natively within a Mac. Mac's are a little pricey, but Apple uses only good parts and their hardware is proprietary.

Hp and Hp compaq make the most reliable laptops, because they only use the one company to buy their parts from, therefore they all work together better than other manufacturers like toshiba for example who buy from several different manufacturers just to get cheap ones and make a better profit. Hp machines also have very good levels of performance, for example £1000 will get you a 2.16Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB of RAM, 200GB Hard-Disk, A dedicated ATI graphics card and maybe even an HD-DVD player. So compared to other laptops it is certaily better build and quality wise and on performance it is probably ranked in the top 3 laptop manufacturers, I wish i bought one instead of a dell when I got my new laptop :(
Hope this helps, Kieran

My best friend had an HP for years. It didn't cost much, had a good video card, and was built like a tank. She was pretty happy with it at first. But after a couple years things started going wrong--the port for the power cord, the fan, the keyboard, etc. HP's customer service was horrible. They kept it for weeks and didn't fix the issue she'd asked them to fix, and then they sent her laptop to the wrong address. A newer HP laptop might be a better option. But their customer service will still stink.
I had a Dell laptop for years and didn't have many problems with it ... I'd recommend Dell.
Currently I use a Macbook and am very happy with it. You should get a Mac if you can afford one. They're pricey but much less prone to crashing. Also they're hot. :-)

You need to give us more informations here. What is it for, how much do you want to spend, etc.
To answer your question directly as phrased - yes, you can buy an HP. It is not the best laptop brand out there though - and in fact, I would stick with brands like Dell and Toshiba for a laptop pc.

HP notebooks and desktops are a top of line computer. As far as which one you should get I would need a bit more info from you like what you like to do on your notebook. A general recommendation would be dv9500t series. It is a 17'' screen with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, windows vista home premium, 1-4 GB of memory, wireless, light scribe capable, web cam, quick play, and imprint finish. If you have more specific needs please list them and I can recommend something else.

The words best laptop and cheap can be synonymous together. Do what I did. Get one for very, very cheap. It is a very easy process. Just go to www.letsgetitfree.com for information on how to receive one. I got an apple macbook and I love it. They also have Sony and other laptops. If you want a wider selection than what that site offers then email me and I can give ou a link to some more. Just thought you might be interested. It is very easy, fast, and cheap. I highly recommend! =)

EVEREX XT5000T
Awesome graphics. Great speed (although I did upgrade to 2gb ram) Easy upgrade though, thought it would be harder. Best deal for your money. I think you would be hard pressed to find a laptop with these specs for less. The keyboard layout is diffrent but not something that takes forever to get used to I am already used to it.
