My guess would be the same excuse that all the other teams that didn't win the world series either, the other team was better.

1. We underestimated how much talent $195,000,000 would buy.
2. We were busy trying to figure out how to offer Andruw Jones a 5 year, $100,000,000 contract.
3. We decided that 26 championships was way more then we deserved.
4. We were busy trying to decide if we should sign Barry Bonds so that he can get HGH for Giambi at wholesale.
