Less than < points to the left.
Greater than > points to the right and is eating the smaller number.

The first symbol is less than. The second symbol is greater than. You can think of the symbols as jaws that is always trying to eat the bigger thing.

The little end always points toward the smaller number.It is amost intuiutive once you learn it.The big end is always towards the bigger number.
