My CPU comes on for only a minute and shuts down because the CPU fan failed, Is it possible to back my hard drive now or is it too late? What options do I have. I am going to fix the cpu but that would restore my factory configurations.

Please Advice!

If all your doing is replacing the CPU Cooler or fan, then you won't loose any data. At this point your only option is to fix the fan, or take the Hard Drive out, install it in another PC as a slave drive, and then backup the data to a CD/DVD, jump drive, external drive ect.

Plugging your hard drive into another computer that has a CD/DVD burner is a good idea, but if it is just your CPU fan you can go to computer store and buy a new one. That way you can still use the computer as well as backing up your hard drive and a fan is a lot cheaper than a new computer. A best place to find a new fan would be a small privately owned computer store, but even places like Circuit City or CompUSA will carry them. You may have to take the old one out and take it with you to make sure you get the right model.

Easy answer as long as the drive is intact your data is still there.

Invest in a portable / external hard drive enclosure (about $20 to $40 depending on where you shop) and a new hard drive at least the same size as the one you have.

1) Remove your current hard drive and mount it in the enclosure.
2) Install the new hard drive in your computer (all this is simply screws and plugs.. and maybe a jumper)
3) Repair or replace your cpu and startup and format the new hard drive ..
4) When your computer is up and running you can either
a) Swap the hard drives back
b) Copy your data files back to the new hard drive (if you do this consider re-formatting the old one afterwards)
c) Simply use the external drive as a 'D' drive
5) Either way, you can now automate your computer to keep a backup of one hard drive on the other.

Two problems solved with a couple of easy steps..

best option - just plug your hard drive into another pc and do it that way. but if your fan has crashed and your computer will only run for a few seconds. there will be no way you can do it on your own pc.
