The FIA Sporting Regulations state this if two or more drivers are tied;
"If two or more constructors or drivers finish the season with the same number of points, the higher place in
the Championship (in either case) shall be awarded to :
a) the holder of the greatest number of first places,
b) if the number of first places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of second places,
c) if the number of second places is the same, the holder of the greatest number of third places and so
on until a winner emerges.
d) if this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria
as it thinks fit."
Hmmm, as it thinks fit!? Given the FIA's blunders and general state of confusion...answer D seems to be a murky. Fairly consistent though eh? I mean the FIA has always been a bit cloak & dagger like. A bit autocracy, but only just a bit...lol.
Kidding of course! They are an Autocracy!
Well, in any case I'm hoping that al-schmonso once again comes apart like a cheap suit and self destructs so a possible tie is a non-issue. I remarked two years ago, that this guy won championships in a car that was a huge cut above anything else in the field. He had good moments
in the car, and he had no competition or media pressure regarding his teammate. alschmonso cannot handle constant high pressure and a teammate that is better than he is. 2007 has shown the real fernando.
He was not and is not a great driver, he is decent. Good on some days, and medicro on other days. Not the mark of a true champion. He will never be regarded or remembered as one of the very best in F1.
Where he will wind up in 2008 is still up in the air, but the most likely place for him is back with the chain smoking, self-absorbed, arrogant flavio and team Renault. flav and fernando can talk about how great they are to each other, flav smoking unfiltereds and fernando drinking lots of espresso or unfino... : -}
This may be a prejudice statement, (not that I care!) but the majority of Spain's recent top athletes are a bunch of pampered, cry babies. Nadal, Raul, Freire, Mayo, Ferraro, etc. It's a Latin trait, I mean these guys by nature just cannot keep their emotions in check. Yes, emotional motivation or displays are good and necessary, in life and sport, but when it comes down to crunch time, these guys usually self-destruct. It's in their blood. Italians, (I'm of Italian heritage) and SA's on this list as well.
Congratulations Lewis Hamilton on your first World Championship, in your F1 debut season.

Down to amount of races won. Going into the Japanese GP, Hamilton had a 2 point lead. If Alonso had won and Lewis came second then they would have the same amount of championship points but as Alonso had won 4 races and Lewis at that point had won 3, Alonso would have been leading
But now even though it's 4 wins each, Lewis has the greater points advantage. I want him to win the championship so badly!!!

The Driver Championship will go to the person wins more races. At this moment, Kimi - 5. Both Alonso & Lewis are 4.

OK if points were tied they would see who won the most races that season, if that was tied they go for the greater number of second places, if that is a tie then it's the greater number of third places and so on till a winier emerges, if this procedure fails to produce a result, the FIA will nominate the winner according to such criteria as it thinks fit.

In the very unlikely event, they do end up on the same points.
They carry out a count back. How many wins, 2nd Places etc etc.
Higher than fourth in the next two races, and the title is Hamiltons.
EDIT:
Ricki, look before you guess. Both drivers have won 4 races this season. Muppet.

Its who has the most wins, if thats level then its who has the most 2nds, and seeing Lewis has been on the podium in virtually every race I think he'll probably get it
but it wont go to that Lewis will beat the whinging spaniard hands down and I'm not saying that cos I is black cos Im not.

They go by who has most wins, then by most podiums...Its unlikley they will tie though. Hamilton basically will clinch the championship this week if he can finish 1st or 2nd.

If it goes to a tie, they will base the championship on the amount of races the driver has won. If they have equal amount of victories, I'm not sure!
