YOU CAN USE THE ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD. IT WILL BE A PAIN TO TURN IT ON ONLY TO USE THE SHIFT KEYS, BUT ITS AN ALTERNATIVE. OTHERWISE, A NEW KEYBOARD WILL DO.
TO GET TO THE ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD:
CLICK START>ALL PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>ACCESSIBILITY> ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD.

There are that you can use. Caps Lock for capital letters. But it gets a little complicated if you need symbols. You'll need to hit a combination of the "Alt" key and a number. You can only type in the numbers from the key pad on the right of the key board and while typing in the number you have to hold down the "Alt" key.
An example of this is "Alt" + 33= ! or "Alt" + 35 = #. To me the useful ones start from 33 and go up to 138, but it's best that go through all of them and make a list that's useful to you. Or if you don't want to go through all of that you can just buy a new keyboard, Officemax and Radioshack should have some starting around $15.

I don't believe there is an alternate shift key if both are not working you might need a new keyboard. But you can try popping off the shift key itself and seeing if something is stuck under it our using an air can to dust it to see if something is stuck under it and it will work again after. I did that once to my enter key and it worked because it had a small piece of paper keeping it from pushing down all the way.

You did not say what happened before it stopped working. When my shift keys do not work, I set the keyboard aside and use another of several stand by boards I have learned to keep. Any dirt in the board will stop it working properly, and after a while it can be workable again. If you have spilled anything or dropped it or something, and you have no spare, it might need repair or replacement. Good luck!

try disabling your sticky keys....on win7 you can tap on the shift key for 8- 10 seconds to bring up the sticky keys settings or go to control panel and find it there. Disable the sticky key and see if it will work again...if not then am sorry .... or probably you can use autoit script to set up your keyboard or your shift key.It will be great though.

It's a pain, but use can use Caps Lock whenever you need a capital letter. Just remember that as soon as you type it, to take Caps Lock off.
