I live in an apt and I am trying to help the landlord out by finding a cheap one on Ebay, but don't know if they will work or fit or whatever? I have never had a garbage disposal before, but found that they are very handy and I like having it, but she cannot afford to buy one. Any comments/suggestions anyone has are appreciated. Thanks-

The reason I am trying to help is because my building is owned by a church and they do a lot of good things for the community-and I meant that she (director)/they (church) cannot afford to put a lot of money into it at this time since it is not a necessity. It is also questionable as to what happened. I may have broken it myself. I really don't know. Thanks for all your suggestions and I have tried the reset switch :) Thanks again to everyone.

They will all fit into the sink. However the easiest to install are ones that fit into the mounting bracket that is there already. It just twists and clicks onto that. Look at what brand you have now and see if you can get one that is supposed to use the same sink-mounting ring. And of course if it plugs into an outlet under the sink instead of needing to be wired that is a plus also.

I would look in off-price stores that have new ones for about twenty dollars. A used one on eBay might leak or might have electrical problems.

Unless you are planning to live in that apartment for the next 20 years you should not buy a large, elegant, high power one. A merely adequate will meet your needs.

Let the landlord find the the garbage disposal, she collects rent from you each month and also has a tax write off at the end of the year for all repairs. It's nice that you want to help but you just might find a cheap one that only lasts a short time then what happens when it goes out again. Ebay is not the place to look for an item like that, you have no way to check the operation or if it will fit your sink.

Any model should work, just make sure you have the space for a larger one if you purchase it under the sink. The model I bought barely fits, but I got the 1 horse puppy.

A little advice from my experience, make sure you have the disposal on a circuit that does not pull a lot from other appliances as the disposal can pull usually 8 amps or more starting with a normal circuit in the house being 20 amps. If you have a heating appliance on it could trip the breaker. The other thing is don't go for the cheapest one. Go for a middle of the road, they last longer and work better than a base model. This prevents you from having to go under the sink again. Also make sure your sink opening is made to fit a disposal. They have a drain bracket that comes with them and then you twist and latch the disposal on with a handy alan wrench they ship with it. My last piece of advice is to have your switch for the disposal more than an arms reach away. This keeps you from having your fingers in the sink when you turn it on (I get paranoid about things like that).

I've replaced many of them and never had a problem going from one brand to another just keep in mind how much noise you want to hear from it when you turn it on some models are quieter then others I would recommend going with a badger in-sink erater either a 1/3 hp or 1/2 hp

It's your landlords responsibility to replace the broken one.
(and anything else that comes with the apt.)
She's playing on your sympathy. She Owns real estate!
Does your rent go down if you don't get it replaced?
Nooo. Rent has profit built in.. more than enough to replace the garbage disposal.

first i would check to see if has a reset button on the bottom...if does push it....see if that brings it back

Also, even though your landlord can not afford one.....why are you buying it....

Get an agreement if you buy it, it comes off your rent.

It is their responsibility to repair your surroundings if they can not afford something simple like disposal and you have to buy it......ask yourself " if the furnace broke tomorrow what woud this poor landlord do"----sounds like you might be cold for awhile.

They're pretty much universal (as far as the way they mount to the adapter at the sink drain).
Pretty much any one should work.
