Using your analogy of us- phil relations as sort of a romance or marriage.... then the philippine independance is the divorce or split up that makes it really over.. sometimes it takes one party some time to deal with the reality of a split up.. just because a couple splits up does not mean they must always be enemies.. some really mature, and good hearted people can maintain a good relationship as friends even after a divorce.. and it is great to see that happen, especially when there are kids involved. There is no use living in the past and wondering how things would be if there was no split up, it is done, it's over, it happened, deal with it. The idea of Philippines becoming a state ended with independance, no use really of digging it up anymore, and statehood or status as a US territory is not going to be a magical cure to make everyone happy or wealthy.. and really does not change things all that much.. US states and US territorites still elect thier own leaders from thier own citizens, create thier own laws, run thier own goverments, collect thier own taxes, and deal with thier own disasters and poverty... The world is a better place when people and countries get a along, and cooperate for our mutual benefit in business, the economy and for peace. It seems that some filipinos have this problem believing that they are really free.. which makes thier own mind a sort of prison for them. Maybe this is why filipinos chose to be independant from USA, while all other US states were formerly territories that chose, and voted for, statehood. The US could not consider itself a free nation if it did not allow the citizens of territories to choose for themselves if they wished to become a state and a part of the US. Philllipines chose not to become a US state, but that does not mean close friendships, economic and otherwise, should not exist.

You are correct: the complete lack of will among the American people to challenge the totalitarian enactments of their imperial government makes many people long for the revolutionary spirit of the founding fathers of this nation. However, the quote also implies, if one thinks about it, that clearly unrestrained free-market capitalism as a force that works against "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," is antithetical to both the function and the goals of a democratic society. One need look no further for proof than the illegal occupation of Iraq, which has taken place solely to benefit the administration's corporate masters.

I have thought several times that the best way for us to get out of Iraq would be for the Iraqis to propose and pass a declaration Of Independence akin to ours (or even ours verbatim, with all of its references to the oppressor named George).

The main problem is that ours was passed unanimously, by people who knew full well what they were getting into. The Iraqis weren't ready to take the necessary steps out of tyranny on their own, and we got tricked into trying to do it for them, which will never work. The essential part that is missing over there right now is the part that goes: "for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

Sometimes a Revolution disintegrates promptly into civil war. The same would happen, by the way, if we were to attempt a violent overthrow of our own system. The old divide and conquer is too firmly in effect.

How come the people of this country are morons?People who don't watch the news or read a paper or keep in touch with anything besides fashion and music.Why do these people when you go to a party start spewing garbage like they think they know anything about anything?PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!
