Me and my friends are playing a game.
And the game is "saying a country."
My friend start first saying a country name.
And then my second friend continues.
Then me. So after 12 mins past by we have no more countries
to name anymore. And it was my turn so I said Newfoundland.
And my first friend said there is no country like that. And I said there is a country like that. And then he said If there is a country name Newfoundland I will give you $50 but if there isn't then you give me $50. So I said ok. So we all went home and I researched on Newfoundland. And it said it was and independent country from 1907 to 1934. After that it is now a part of Canada. So my question is should I give $50 to him?

Your friend is probably upset because when games like that are played, it's always current countries, never ones from 6+ years ago, as fights will start - like the one you're in. You probably ran out of ideas and that's why you guessed Newfoundland.

If you went to a good school, you would have learned that Newfoundland is a province in Canada and you would have said Norway instead of Newfoundland.

Newfoundland is no longer an existing independent country. However, if you are going to be technical about it, the clue is in the name of the game. It is not specific enough to exclude it because the name of the game is not "saying an existing country". Past or present was not specified in the original game. He, however challenged you by betting on the "is", not "was", therefore you owe him the money.

In this case, I would call it a tie. You were partially right, it was a country, but you were partially wrong too, it is not a country anymore. I think what you should be most worried about is causing a fight over this. That would be stupid. Fighting over fifty dollars is not worth losing a friendship over. I think the two of you should talk it over and if he is really angry about it and wont let it rest, then he really doesnt sound like the sort of friend that would be best for you.
You sound kind of young also, if you are then let me say this. Gambling like that can really have a big impact on your life. It can tear apart friendships that you have had for years, it can get you in trouble, and it can lose you a lot of money. its a stupid thing to do no matter how old you are and can get you into situations like this or much worse. Please use your head before getting into bets.

No, it was a country, but now is with canada. By playing the game you where trying to save the country from being taken over, but you where just a few years late.

Technically, you should because it's no longer a country. But since it USED to be a country, you shouldn't. You should give each other $25. :-)

Well, technically there -is- no country called New-foundland... But there -was-. So I think you should give him $25, but he should return it just as promptly. I know that kinda leaves you back at square one, but thats what me and my friends do when we get into a predicument. We make a big joke about it and get on with stuff.
