I have lived in the midwest all my life and next year I will be moving down south for college. Either North Carolina or South Carolina, depending on which school I get accepted into. Will I be in for a culture shock. Many time I have heard that the northerners are usually the outsiders on campus. Can someone give me some insight?

The shock will be almost certainly ALL GOOD.

Southerners are the absolute best at making you feel welcome. They are by nature warm, caring and very generous people ,especially in both North and South Carolina.

Forget the southern accents, you'll get pass it in a few day, guaranteed.Southerners are generally a little less liberal than northerners, but most all are good down to earth folks.

Your going to have a ball.
It's definitely a change for the better.

Yes you'll be in culture shock. I live in Louisiana and everytime I crossed the Red River I got culture shock. Keep in mind I never left the state or parish and I still got culture shock. I can only imagine the shock you'll get. We're all good people it's just a completely different way of life and a completely different accent and different culture. It's almost like going to a different country. Good luck. 2D

I can t believe all the friendly southerns. Haven t met you in Florida. Many Floridians are hostile toward northerners. The gun culture is totally different. When I discovered how little these states care about their people in terms of services I started crying and wanted to leave (I am not needy). Florida seems to attract doctors who love to make the most money, and inflict the most pain especially on the elderly. Driving is buckle up and pray, everyone does what they want. Yeah I m in culture shock. this yankee may just go back home soon.

Hi, I am from Alabama and you can't get much Southern than that. It sound like you will fit right in.Our weather is not as cold as yours but the summers may ocasionally get a little above 100 degrees but mostly 97/98 I have never lived in Tennesee but it is probably similar to Alabama and I love it here. You do not have to worry about standing out because all sorts of people and cultures are here just like they are anywhere else. Just be yourself and you will fit right in. Hope you like sweet, ice tea in the summers.

I've lived in NC for about 5yrs...I came from IN for work...@ first it was different, but no i don't think you will have any problem....nobody is from here....the only northerners that come and get out-casted do that to themselves.... mostly everyone here is nice and pleasant, they wave to each other and open doors....suggestion in schools: UNCW great beach town lots of things to do....ECU party central, depends on what your going for....good luck

The first difference you will notice is the accent. Some people have a very twangy accent which makes it difficult to decipher what is being said. Ask those who have such an accent to be patient with you as you are learning the nuances of their accent.
