It works sometimes, but not 100% of the time. If I put a blank rewritable CD in it, it will never read it, and it will make some sounds then it opens back and i have to push the CD back in. If I put in an original music CD, it does the same, but if i keep trying, it reads it eventually... Any help?

This issue can be caused by one of the following two possibilities.

Bad or non audio CD is inserted.
MCI CD audio driver not installed or corrupt.
Solution:

Bad or non audio CD is inserted.

Ensure that the CD you have currently in the computer is not bad or being misread by the computer by inserting another known good audio CD into the computer.

If another audio CD works it is likely either that the CD is dirty or may be an enhanced CD incompatible with the CD Audio player. Steps on properly cleaning a CD can be found on our cleaning page.

MCI CD audio driver not installed or corrupt.

If no audio CD is working in the computer but other CDs work fine it is likely that the MCI CD audio driver is not installed or corrupt on the computer. Note if no CDs are working see document CH000227.

To reinstall / install the MCI CD audio drivers follow the below steps:

Click Start / Settings / Control Panel
Double-click on Multimedia
Click the Advanced tab or Device tab.
Double-click Media Control Devices.
Double-click CD Audio Device (Media Control).
If this device is present and you no audio CDs are working click remove on the general tab in CD Audio Device (Media Control) properties.
Close out of all open Windows to get back to the Control panel
In Control panel double-click Add New Hardware.
Click Next, select No, click Next -- In the box listing the available hardware select Sound Video and Game controllers and click Next.
In the Manufactures box select Microsoft MCI.
In the Models box select CD Audio Device (Media Control).
Click Next and Finish.
Once Windows has completed the installation of the new device reboot the computer.

Simple answer.
Your CD ROM is about dead.
Why?
All CD ROMs has laser head.
That head must have properly alignment and intensity,
After some days intensity is less or alignment is out of standard position .
Cheap CD ROM works about 1-2 years.
If disalignment or intensity is less one CD will read OK another No.
More expensive CD ROM works great many years.

Very likely your CD player (the lens) is very dirty, or had the #@%&*!! knocked out of it and its not in perfect alignment. Get a cleaning kit (Staples, Office Max, etc.) or go to the GEEK SQUAD (Best Buy) or other Computer guys and ask them to clean it and align it if necessary.

Hi. You could try cleaning the lens with a cleaning disk, but a replacement might be a better choice. Not expensive and easy to do yourself.

More than likely the lazer light that reads the disc,is either not working or the player isn't turning.
