I loved "Blue Highways" when I first read it back in the early 80s. But I hadn't realized that the "Nameless, Tennessee" section had been anthologized until I read your question and did some research. Apparently Prentice-Hall now has it in one of their anthologies as one of the "Best American Short Stories of the Century" - and I'd say it definitely deserves to be included.
And that's so because "Blue Highways" is a wonderful picaresque work of non-fiction that makes a valiant attempt, much in the fashion of Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley", to get to the heart of the "real USA."
In both cases, by learning about the folks met along the way, the authors learn a lot about themselves, as well.
t's a truly great book that could use even more attention than it's gotten so far.

I have not read it, but if you liked it, you will also like Blue Highways, his book about traveling throughout the US on minor highways. It came out in about 1984.
