I saw this movie yesterday...I was HORRIFIED...
In the movie, whole Britain is destroyed by a terrible virus which turns the humans in zombies who kill and eat everyone...
The most terrifying thing is the fact the virus has IMMEDIATE effects, and the attacked person becomes a zombie in less than 1 minute.
In the movie, there are some scary images and horrible scenes, and last night I was scared that I closed all my windows ( despite of the heat )
I noticed that ,at several times, the virus could strike new victims just because of the psychology and the pity of the characters ( the US soldier who refuses to shot the young child, and he decides to save some humans ; the military doctor who wants to help the two children ; the husband who kisses her infected woman, because he beg pardon ; the helicopter US Black pilot who accepts to carry the two children; etc...)
Such a catastrophy CANNOT BE ?
I never felt such a thrill in my whole life...

1) I don't think someone can turn into a flesh eating zombie
2) I don't think there is a virus that can kill in 1 minute. However there are 2 that CAN kill within 2- 21 days after infection. The CDC and other "Hot" labs are testing them in level 4 containment units because of their ability to infect someone quite easily. If an infected person is extremely lucky and survives it, the contagion can still be passed on up to 7 weeks later by the carrier

I haven't seen it but I saw 28 days later and I actually do believe with all of the testing and so on it would take something as simple as a Monkey bite or another type of bite to make some kind of virus that could have similar effects and that is why I think this movie and 28 weeks later have been a success, it plays on the possibilites that this could actually happen!

Well, physiologically, the virus would have to take over your entire immune system and there aren't many that can do that that quickly and you still be walking. Virus's that spread that rapidly usually destroy, so you die, but ones that invade and mutate need to do so at the bodies own rate of metabolism.
Also, think of the film as a poor sequel to an excellent retrospect on our Western society's current obsession with the self. Rage is all the norm now, and seen to be justified. Which is probably the real threat.

Yes, it is possible.
We won't turn into zombies, but a breakout of a huge disease is not only possible, but it has happened many times before.
Have you heard of the black plague? The disease that wiped out most of europe?
Scientists say that we are actually due for a 'black plague' equivalent.
If you read science magazine's such as New Scientist, you will know that bird flu and equine flu could mutate and humans will be vulnerable.
If bird flu mutates, it will be only a few days before the virus is spread around the world, thanks to international public transport. Our entire race could be destroyed.
Luckily, cures are being developed.

This kinda of stuff does exist and it is only some kind of miracle that something horrible and nasty not escaped already. OH **** I forgot, AIDS, BIRD FLU, EBOLA, ANTHRAX, need I go on ? Governments of the world do this stuff all day everyday, and corporations do it also but have trouble keeping it secret, unless they are working for the government which they are in most cases. The most likely scenario is actually resident evil, a genetically manipulated mutating virus and accidents covered up by the corporation and and the government they control.

Yes Seen it. And yes it could happen, its a man made virus in the movie, terrorists already exist and if they aquired such a virus would wreak havoc on the planet.

I think it's absolutely possible but probably not in the way it happened in the movie. There are man-made viruses which could wipe out a population, but I think what's even scarier are the viruses which are carried by animals (like avian flu) or found naturally (the flu in general, especially one which has no cure).
