Hello,
(ANS) The importance of closing down windows with care cannot stressed enough, even in windows Vista (no matter what version you have). Why? because if you don't close windows down correctly you may well end up with a dirty or incomplete windows registry database.
ALL your settings (any changes you make during a session) are saved into the registry, each person who log's into windows gets their own user profile. These profiles can be seen under c:\documents and settings but you wont have access to other users files or documents only your own.
Thus when you log out of a windows session any changes you have made need to be saved into the registry under your profile (your profile is updated and saved to into the registry).
If Vista (windows) is NOT closed down correctly you are in danger of having a corrupted or damaged registry, this can be bad news. Windows will always attempt to save the registry and it does in fact make its own backup's of the registry for emergency purposes.
Closing down VIsta (windows) from the start button, start menu, shut down or log off is the preferred method and will ensure a clean registry.
**If the registry is damaged or dirty (corrupted) then it can show up when you restart windows.
**The registry can be cleaned as a last resort but this has to be done by an experienced person (not a novice task, no disrespect!!). because its extremely easy to end up with worse damage if your not extremely careful.
Hope that helps?
Kind Regards Ivan

Hi. No, I wouldn't. Make sure you always shut down properly. In Vista this is a little hidden, but near your old Start button is a window with a small left arrow. Open this and Shutdown will be visible.

I had that once. No big deal. Most likely because you just pulled the plug and didn't shut the system down like you should.
I never, and I mean never turn of vista (or xp, linux mint, ...) like you should. I always just press the power button for 5 seconds, been doing that for years.
So, no big deal.
