Depends on what type of router. Some are wireless, some are not. Depends on what you want.
No monthly fees for a router, it is simply a little box you plug into that you buy from a retailer for around 50-100 US dollars.

In packet-switched networks such as the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each point-of-presence on the Internet.
Router may be a wireless.U've to buy and get installed router by ur ISP providers or u can get it from any store and install it with the help of installation CD that comes wid it, I don't think so u have to pay monthly fees for that.what u have to pay is ur monthly Internet connection fee.

A router is a device that extracts the destination of a packet it receives, selects the best path to that destination, and forwards data packets to the next device along this path. They connect networks together; a LAN to a WAN for example, to access the Internet. There are many types of routers one of which is wireless routers. A wireless router's antenna technology generally determines its WiFi signal strength and hence its range. Generally speaking, 802.11g wireless routers offer better WiFi range than comparable 802.11b units due to improved antennas. Typical range is anywhere from few feet to several hundred feet. There is no monthly fee to use a wireless router. You just have to pay for the router.

A router will allow you to connect multiple computers to the internet and each other by acting as a switch. Many routers also have antennas for wireless internet. Try to get at least a wireless-G router. There are no monthly fees and it should cost you under 100 dollars.

and learn more about home networking. btw, your modem will plug into the router (there's a specific plug for it). Typically there are 4 additional RJ45 plugs on the router where you can directly plug in ethernet cables that run from your computer's network interface card (nic). If you go wireless, then you have a combination of both.
Your computers 'hide' behind your router. The router will issue IP addresses to each device connected to it (other than the modem). Still need to run firewalls and such on your computers. Hackers are ingenious.
Good luck!
