Mandavilia's are wonderful... they vine a lot so you might need a trellis of some kind. The blooms smell wonderful. This plant however will die back in the winter... Bougainvillea is another beautiful vining plant...
Ficus trees are great... they will grow to suit the size of the pot you plant it in. I had a huge one indoors at one time. Orange trees are also very pretty and smell wonderful!
If you plant a small or dwarf tree, you can then plant flowers in the pot for added color.
I have huge pots with herbs growing in tandem with bell peppers and marigolds... smells wonderful, and produces things that I can cook with! Tarragon, thyme, rosemary are herbs that are very fragrant and you can trim them back as much or as little as you would like.

More info? Are you wanting to paint furniture or ? You mention potted? As in a plant vessel of some sort? They sell a Krylon paint that works well for furniture and also one that has a granite texture that you can put on outside of pots. You can also get a rustoleum for outdoor furniture. Hmm.... looks like I may have read that wrong I thought you were writing paint, but looks more like a misspelling of plant. I would perhaps plant coleus. They thrive wonderfully! I don't know what part of the country you live in. If you are thinking more fall then those cabbage plants will work out too. A good summer flower would have been impatients.

Plant it in the biggest pot you have room for to let it max out. Most of the tomatoes will ripen at the same time - not spread out over the season, so be prepared to process them into relish, salsa, etc. Most patio tomatoes are pretty hardy. A squirt of a general veggie fertilizer should be sufficient for now, and again in about a month. Be sure to put it in a sunny location. Great luck!

Hostas make wonderful patio plants and are quite happy in pots. They prefer partial shade but beware of the slugs who seem to enjoy eating them. There are many different types and most of them flower.
