I know 25 yr old young men that play" War of the Worlds"
most of their day. My ll yr old grandson comes in from school and goes straight to the latest game and machine. What's happening?

The generation of video, media hype, peers, and some parents that allow them to play for hours on end, just because they like having their time (child is occupied). My 25 year old son is addicted to them, and No, I didn't allow hours on end of playing as a child. That is a very good question, it seems that it is getting worse before better, and younger children have no idea what fun they are missing playing outside as we did.

My middle grandson is absolutely addicted. When his parents realized this more than four years ago, and tried to take his game systems away he went through ALL the classic symptoms of withdrawal. It was not a pretty sight. (Can YOU imagine a seven year old crying hysterically because his mom took a game controller away from him and said "NO more?) His grades dropped. He developed all sorts of nervous tics. He hardly ever smiled, and would sit there doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING because he could not play his games.

His Mom finally gave in and allowed him to start playing again. But now he has only ONE HOUR per day to play. He's back to being a great kid. And that hard callous he had built up on his thumb from pushing those buttons on the controller, have faded away as if they never existed.

I don't agree with your first respondent. Gambling is not a drug either, but people can certainly become addicted to that too. What they are ACTUALLY becoming addicted to is their own endorphins that are released when we are in a state of excitement. A REAL ADDICTION it certainly IS!

It's mindless entertainment to some, skill building to others, a way to pass the time for even more. It's not just young people, many adults are "addicted" to games or just being online. It's not like when we were kids and our parents made us go play outside.

My two grown boys play them whenever possible. It's like a mental challenge to them. They are great boys. I'm very grateful that they are addicted to video games and keeping their minds active rather than being addicted to drugs, alcohol, food, sex, ect...

Some are addicted, which is why the Chinese Government actually put a LIMIT on how long a kid can play
