First, wait a bit and see if your laptop is downloading an update for some of your software (for some reason, Windows won't tell you it's doing this anymore....drives me crazy). Then, try restarting your computer. If you get that far, try disk cleanup and disk defragment (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools). Windows disk cleanup and defragmenter won't harm your system...but they can help it run faster. Finally, consider registry cleanup software (surf online for some examples).
Last idea...have you added some new software recently?

when the laptop bearly starts, do a ctrl+alt+delete, and open up task manager, then go to the processes tab, sort by user name and any of the titles w/ur loggin name delete except taskmgr.exe cause then u have to ctrl+alt+delete again. after all the extra programs are gone, u can locate the program and run it w/out explorer.exe by goin to the aplications tab, new task then manually locating, or new task and type in explorer, to bring back the main screen. also probably consider getting ccleaner from ccleaner.com to clean out unusued files, and it's nice since it lets you clear all the registry files that aren't usuable in the first place
i do this all the time since my computer is being sluggish, and being able to have extra memory available usually lets me do other things
-or
it could be a RAM issue, try going to the manufacture site, locate model and find out if you can have more memory installed

probably your laptop attacked by virus or worm. you may reformat your laptop for this probs. else, maybe your ram is too small. try to upgrade to a higher size such as 1Gb or 2Gb ram.
Or, there is lot of program running at a time, stop some program that not needed when you use your laptop.
