About 4 million years ago, there were 3 mutations which put together gave us the ability to speak. (throat muscle changes primarily) This gave the weaker of our species the means to gang up on the bullies and either drive them off or kill them. Now we have two sets of genes mingling. Those that are common to bullies as they take over other groups, and those who gang together for protection and don't acknowledge outsiders.
Considering there is an act of bullying every 3 minutes in a chimpanzee society (family unit for the most part) humans are pretty peaceful, but we have a long way to go.

You can't really generalize that all of mankind is wicked. It's more that there is a balance to everything. Everything is kept in check if you look around. We are born, yet die to make room for the next generation. Winter leads to Summer, Day leads to Night, and even animals or plants that are very poisonous to most living things are delicious snacks to a small group of animals thus insuring that the poisonous animal/plant doesn't take over. So those who do bad things represent the balance to the good. I believe I read a comment noting a "selfish gene" which may be true, don't know too much about it, but people who act in a wicked manner may just be someone who acts more like an earlier human may have to insure survival. Their experiences and background also have a lot to do with how they end up.

I believe there is absolutely nothing wrong with mankind. He is neither good nor wicked and does not need saving. The problem is the stories we believe about ourselves and the way this influences the way we live. For example, a belief that we are the ultimate in creation or the highest form of evolution gives us a certain arrogance in the way we treat other species. The Christian view that God gave us dominion over the earth and animals allows us to treat the planet in ways that may cause our demise as a species. We need to find a new story to tell about ourselves and find a new way to live.

Maybe all animals are wicked. They do whatever is best for themselves without caring how it effects others. The difference with people is that not all of us are that way. Because somewhere along the way we developed a sense of morality.

A better question is "why are some people good?"

It is largely argued in the social sciences that we have what is called a "selfish gene" this selfish gene seems to be something that is in our DNA an exists as a surviving mechanism in order to preserve and protect our own lives and the ones of our direct descendants.

This selfish gene is manifested in the fact that we always try to obtain the best conditions for living for our families and at a larger scale to the people of our same, color, religion and ethnicity.

If you explore this further, you will see that this is represented all over the world where people fight for their countries, religions, resources for their people etc.

Sad but true, but at least is good to understand that is linked to a developed survival mechanism (which does not make it any better)

Only some of mankind is wicked.

Lots of mankind is loving, kind, thoughtful, compassionate, and heroic.

Unfortunately, only the first kind makes the news most days.

There are acts of kindness and self-sacrifice all around us every day, mutually as the final public of the human inhabitants, like various residing creatures (apart from domicile cats), is purely suffering to outlive each and every day. Get off your severe horse and pitch in.

Because their is a bad side and a good side in all of us. Some people related more to the bad side then the good side (and vice versa). How ever very few people can actually balance it out.
