I hit a speedbump in a Renault Scenic, which, unknowingly, resulted in a hole in the sump. When the oil light came on, I was in an unsafe area and had to drive another 2 km's (roughly just over a mile). I drove at a very slow speed and the car was still leaking oil when I had finally stopped the car.

Now that the hole has been fixed and the oil replaced, the car is making a rattling noise and is cutting out as soon as the temperature of the car increases. Does this sound like some serious (and expensive) damage has been done to the engine?

Oil is the lifeline of an engine. Never drive it with the oil light on. You have lower engine damage, mains, rod bearings, etc. The engine needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Master tech 40 yrs.

Sorry but yes you did damage the engine and no Pedro it is not the head gasket. The loss of oil and the distance driven caused your engine bearings to fail. They are located between the rods and the crankshaft and eventually you will throw and engine rod.
Friction in an engine plus heat will kill your motor.

You may get Lucky if you have comprehensive insurance on your car as it will cover the damage you describe.
It sounds as if your motor has a death rattle in it. Main or rod damage from lack of pressurized engine oil. Contact your insurance company immediately so they can inspect your oil pan.
Claims against your comprehensive insurance WILL NOT raise your rates one red cent.
