Go to your control panel, select System and then Hardware Manager.

In the box that comes up, you might see a yellow exclamation mark. This means Windows encountered a problem installing your card. If there's nothing there, Windows didn't see it.

Well, either that or it's installed fine and you've got the speakers plugged in wrong! Is there a volume control on the task bar because if there is, Windows is fine.

If there is nothing and Windows can't see it (run the add hardware wizard) then go to the sound card manufacturers website and download the drivers for it.

Figure out what your sound card is (open up the case, if it is a card that is plugged into the motherboard - get the manufacturers name and model #, go online and search for the driver for it.

If the card is built into the motherboard, then try to determine the manufacturer of the board. It would have originally come with CD's with mobo utilities and drivers unless it was a prefab machine. You should be able to search and find the drivers though.

There are utlities for detecting your hardware, or you can just try downloading some of the more common ones and trying them (soundblaster 16, 32, awe64, etc)

You will need to check if it detects your sound device and then install the drivers that go with it.

I would use the "Add New Hardware" from the Control Panel. That will automatically look for devices that are on the computer but not installed and then windows will automatically install the corresponding drivers for it to work.

This is very common. If there is no driver CD that came with your computer, then you must play detective. Go to the web site of the computer manufacturer. Look for a section called Support or downloads. Look up your model and download the driver for your sound card.

the probs is not the sound card. do you have the computer installer with you? This installer given to you after you purchased new computer. it contains all the driver installer inside.
if you don,t have it, go to download.com. check the type of your hardware or manufacturer and then download the driver for free.

Have you downloaded any of the service packs from microsoft.com? That may solve your problem. Also are you using the 32 bit or 64?
