Under a polygraph, the examiner poses that hypothetical question. He adds that you are absolutely sure beyond any shadow of a doubt that the money will never be even missed. There is no chance whatsoever if your being discovered.

Most answer "no" but the polygraph indicates "deception". The examiner goes back to the question time after time and still it indicates "deception". Finally they answer "yes" and the polygraph indicates "truth".

If you were under the polygraph, would the result be similar?

This did not happen to me but I received it from a very reliable source so I believe it a true story.

Most people eventually had to say "yes" in order to pass.

What does this say about our morality? Self delusion?

Those who answered that they would steal, I think, would have tried to lie because of fear they would be fired. They were not taking a polygraph for fun and the employer was looking at the answers.

I wouldn't as I believe in "you reap what you sow", if you take what doesn't belong to you, you will lose much more. Could be stupid from someone's point of view, but life has its rules

No, I would not steal from a bank or keep money in a found wallet that has identification to locate it's owner. I can say this because I once managed a store and the bank gave us credit for the deposit and the teller accidentally put the cash back in the return bag that arrived the next day. It belonged to the bank. It wasn't mine to keep. I called the bank and asked for the teller who was VERY happy to find the missing money. As the manager, I took polygraphs along with the other employees. If your heart is in the right place and you honer your parents, you have no trouble passing one even with a hypothetical question.
