Trolls are people who go out of their way to pose nasty and shocking questions. Trolls also include people who go round putting thumbs-down for no reason. In answer to what you said about getting thumbs-down for a perfectly reasonable answer, that's a troll at work. It happens to me, and I'm sure lots of others as well. Some sad individuals even follow users around just to report them or give them thumbs-down. They even get questions violated for no reason, and I think that serial violaters should be banned, because it is obvious that they are just doing it to be spiteful. Thankfully, they are in the minority, and most people look at questions and answers fairly.
EDIT: Judging by the amount of thumbs-down everyone has for giving reasonable answers, I would assume that the trolls are out in force today!

A troll is a very old (in internet terms) slang word which refers to someone who makes a controvesial statement (or aks a controversial question) which is purely used to provoke people.
an example could be something like "Hitler or Churchill - who was the 'Kinder Man"' (this is a Q, asked on YA!, today)
where the purpose of the question was purely to get an agitated reaction from people
{edit} some people may be giving a thumbs down, simply because they believe the answer is wrong.
Being a troll is not about creating multiple accounts. You can have one account and still be a troll
(I havent given anyone a thumbs down, just speculating that may be the reason why)

that's a moniker that replaced into given interior the early days of usenet bulletin forums. It means that the guy is going from communicate board to communicate board (IE Trolling) posting insults and nonsense that upload no longer something to the verbal exchange. the gentle huge distinction between a troll and a flamer is that the flamer normally has some thing relevance to characteristic to the verbal exchange they do basically it in a propose lively and opinionated way.

Great question - there are loads of trolls in here - epecially in the current events section.
I'll quote from yahoo, "A "troll" is someone who intentionally and persistently posts inflammatory messages about sensitive topics to bait users into responding or provoke a confrontation. We also consider people to be trolls when they persistently misuse product features such as the ratings system to negatively target others.
Like I say - there LOADS of trolls in here!

Troll/ Troller is looking for a response any response and he/she will chum the waters with complaints, insults, compliments and inflammatory tidbits hoping
that someone-ANYONE, will take the bait
generally quite harmless-practise a form of catch and release . nonetheless he/she can upset the delicate ecology of a discussion forum .
once a forum becomes aware of his/her presence however, all feeding activity ceases and troller must move on to more promising waters.

Copied this from community guidlines.
Don't create multiple accounts to troll or otherwise violate these guidelines or the Yahoo! Terms of Service. Don't post things that are incomprehensible or in the wrong language, and don’t post the same question over and over again. The community depends on you to report abuse and rate questions and answers, so using product features such as report abuse and ratings to target others is not allowed.
We obviously know this happens ALOT but they don't do anything about it.
