Because water is the source of life. Nothing can survive without water. Perhaps that is why we are drawn to it. Personally, I love being near the sea, lake, or a river. The water has a calming, relaxing effect.

Personally, I'm a tad scared of vast amounts of water, I can't swim because of this either!
But I suppose because its the source of life. Tribes would build their villages near water so they would always have water to drink and cook with. The land would usually be more fertile for their crops to grow.
Maybe its the constant, gentle ebb of the waves when on a boat or swimming in it. The fact that you can move so freely through it. The way it cools you down. Even the sound is relaxing. The smell of the sea. The look of a peaceful lake.
I do have to admit though, waterfalls are amazing ^_^

Great question! Have a star.
I'm sorry to say I don't know the answer. I do know that I have always loved being near water. Rivers and lakes are great but I am happiest when I am by the sea.
I believe it is good for the spirit - perhaps because water is the most vital thing in our lives, and because it is so alive.

I adore the sea and often go for a swim..It is always a good way of blowing away the cob webs on a windy day. Water is magical I suppose.

first of all, humans ARE animals, to answer your Q, i can only speak for myself but the power of the sea amazes me and almost always sends me into a state of reflection or contemplation.
or maybe it has something to do with water being essential to life as we know it.

it has been sergested, in assosiation with the "out of africa" theroy of human evolution.
that early humans evolved near the coast and migrated along due to population pressure...moveing along the east coast of africa north and out into europe and asia. therefor all humans would have been exposed to the sea for a 100,000 year (very sucsessful) part of their evoultion...
maybe its our subconcious telling us this is a good place (ie for fish and shellfish food) and to stay here?
maybe! thats just a thought!

We need water to live, water is more important than food, i guess it's a natural sub-conscious instinct.
