You could have a 5 million dollar net worth, 500,000 dollar house on the lake, Mercedes, a maid, cook and 10 million in the bank and still be considered living in poverty.

The reality of how it is determined is this. A census is taken creating a giant data base of Americans and sorted by income. Then, government bureaucrats draw an arbitrary line at the point where the people enter the highest tax bracket. That represents the rich. Then they go to the bottom of the list and again, arbitrarily, draw a line at a point where a certain percentage of people are below the line. This is the poverty line. Those under that line are considered poor. When too many rise above this line, the bureaucrats erase it and draw another higher up so that there are always the same percentage under the poverty line.
Everyone between these two lines is considered middle class. It really is as simple as that. Government programs that provide services to those below the poverty line never run out of people to service.

The first link shows how the "poor" level is "calculated", so I'd guess any one above is "the middle class" but can't really seem to find what the government considers rich. Quite a few articles on how to become rich and articles on what people perceive to be rich but can't seem to find the elusive $$ that indicates an exact figure.
