If men had to give birth then eventually they would handle the pain. Evolution has given women an endorphine (I think thats the right word) rush during childbirth which reduces the pain (being a man I'll probably never know to what extent the pain is reduced to and most women will never know what the pain could be without the endorphines). Some species do have male childbirth and they cope.

Another side is that pain is an illusion (albeit a very strong illusion) and with the right coaching etc can be almost entirely overcome.

Also at what point of swapping the roles over do the title swap over? If men start producing eggs and women sperm, would men be called women and vice versa. If it depends on role this would happen, if it depends on genes maybe not (look at birds, the male has XX the female XY, the opposite of mammals).

So yes men would cope, probably not at first (especially if it happens overnight), but it would require a redefining of roles and responsibilities, and may cause psychological problems for both sexes as part of these roles are cultural but part are genetic.

If we had to rely on men to be pregnanat and give birth, the future of humankind would be screwed. They seem to think that a kick in the balls is the worst pain ever - well chaps, try having someone kicking you there continuously for a good 12 hours, and you'll start to understand.

They couldn't handle the pregnancy, let alone the pain!!! The human race would eventually die out.

Edit - I have passed a kidney stone, I'm due to give birth to my first baby next week, if it hurts as much as the kidney stone, I'll be laughing!!!

There would be a serios drop in the number of births and a lot of families would have one child only. In time we would become a very old population with fewer people to support us. Taxes would have to be raised in order to pay for increased number of older dependents. The choice of future partners would decrease rapidly and There would be a lot of singletons and the men would have their pick of the available women!

Passing a kidney stone is more painful than childbirth and men cope with that. A woman who's had children and passed a kidney stone confirmed that the kidney stone was more painful.

You'd get a few (like me) who would relish all involved, tell everyone how easy it is, and make them all feel inadequate. But I think I'd be one of the first so I won't know in advance how painful it really is.
