We just move to a new town and the air stopped working on my wifes truck, well we drove it for a bit longer the bearings grinding and make all kids of noise. I took it in yesterday to a shop by my work and they call and say yep need the entire compressor and its gonna be $1200.00... WHAT??? I talked to my old shop about it and they said $400 for just external parts on up to $800 for the whole darn thing... What the heck!?!

it never hurts to get a second opinion when it comes to large repairs,, you should ask the labor rate and how long a job will take and ask the cost of the parts.. then do some checking on you own call parts store and get prices.. keep in mind that shops will raise the cost a little this is how they make money..
and remember that if you bring you own parts and they go bad you will have to pay twice to replace them and if you go to a shop that warranties the parts and labor you are covered

A/C work is expensive, especially if you have a vehicle over 10 years old. I often recommend that you simply don't fix the air conditioning if the compressor fails and fouls the system with debris. It's often not worth investing that much money in an old car.

You never know. It could be the parts house, or the name brand they sell or yes it could be the station. Or it could just need an AC clutch, which is very possible. Take off the belt and spin the AC pulley. If it looks like its falling apart, then change it. Bob Hickey
