If you are wanting to know the throughput of your internet connection, I recommend trying out http://www.toast.net
The main reason I recommend this is because of the number of differant places you can check your speed. Just click on the 'Internet Speed Test' link on the left hand side.
just a note* If your paying for a 3mbps, your usable band is usually about 50% of that.. so 1.5mbps..
