What under the front is actually a "Front Drive Axle" the pumpkin is the "Third" Differential but it only full functions when you shift into 4WD, until then it's a regular front axle.

It's called a differential. It has gears inside of it. It makes for 4 wheel drive.

That is the metal covering that protects the U joint. Must of worked for 24 years! The steering knuckle still turns on ball joints Or on really early FJ king pins.
