I wanted to connect my mp3 phone and/or portable CD player to my home stereo, to listen to the music out loud! Thing is they both only have a headphone out socket, and my Panasonic stereo, has a headphone out and a "Mix mic" in port. Would it be safe to link via my pc audio cable the phone/walkman cd (headphone out) to my stereo (mic in), and would this even work?

I don't want to try it at the moment incase it ruins my phone/cd walkman or the stereo itself, with the voltage etc, i dunno :/

Thanks all :)

Quick update. If I do quickly try it, I want to know how my stereo speakers are being powered? Is the power coming from the device (mp3 player/walkman) or from the ac mains lead from the stereo? Thanks.

Idd GL, but im not a real audiophile, i just wanted to play the music thru my stereo, without forking out more cash :)

Yep this is the model I have:
http://molotok.ru/pictures/big/a/a/3/aa38f998959bd4c19ca78d869a68566c.jpg

I checked the manual and it just says this:
Jacks;
Output: PHONES: 3.5mm stereo (16-32ohm)
Input: MIX MIC: 3.5mm (200-600ohm)

It seems odd that they put a mic port instead of Aux-In.

Are the ohm ratings any indication to the safety of doing it, now I've got the figures?

Also as I said above I'm interested to now from which source the current to power the music/speakers is coming from, i.e the stereo, or the walkman phone/cd walkman. Thnx :)

Normaly you would have to look for AUX on your sterio and depending on how old your sterio is it should have cd in in either case you will have to get a cd player to radio jack wich has one end to fit in your headpone port and the other end are two jacks red and white normaly but thats if you have cd in on your sterio if you have AUX then you will have to get the same type of cord but with two head phones jack on each end. Am not sure it would work on mic in you would maybe need a amp if you pluged it in there

I haven't done it with an iPod, but that's how I used to hook up my portable CD player. No issues. Not sure if it gave high quality stereo though. (I was in grade school, and didn't care about that.)

Why don't you buy an adapter that will go from the iPod to the back of the stereo? This one's by Monster (so you should be able to find one for less by someone else), but it's only $20...

...and a LONG time ago, I actually put my dad's big headphones through that mic port and I could use the headphones as a mic! Sounded REALLY bad, but worked.

What kind of 'stereo' do you have that is lacking any sort of IN port?

A jambox/boombox/clock radio?

Anything worth listening to audio 'out loud' will have at least the basic of connections (stereo in/stereo out)
If you really want to enjoy audio, purchase a receiver and some speakers.

...it all comes down to what level of experience you expect to get out of the audio/video you have.

Try it...briefly. Plug it in and see if you get a clear signal. Don't leave it in.
If you leave it in too long you'll fry your stereo amp.

I personally would not do it. It could work, in fact it should work, but I would be afraid of what it would do to my other equipment. My brother who is an electronic geek says don't do it.
