Hello,

I currently work at a small high school with less children than the average high school. Our network manager/computer technichian recently left the school, and the school management team has decided to appoint an existing member of staff as the new Network administrator. Because I have a small background in programming and good general computer knowledge, they gave me the job.

Unfortunately I know next to nothing about networking and network management and I would really appreciate if someone would point in the right direction as far as learning the basics of managing a medium sized school network. I would like to know how to do things such as block inappropriate websites and monitor what logged-in students are doing. Can anyone help?

Your question is very generic, You should provide the details of software and that you are using in your network. When it comes to blocking the inappropriate websites, you should provide details about your proxy server. Is it a microsoft ISA server or Opensource squid proxy etc, you can get right answer if the required information is provided as it varies from each other.

You need to check to see what software, if any, is already installed on the school's network. If you can access the computer that the network manager used, log in and see what he/she had. Or call the person, because you may need his/her passwords to access the computer and programs.
If there are programs, run the programs and click on the Help menu. It should guide you through using the programs.
If there are no programs, find out how much money your school is willing to spend for networking and security programs. There are quite a few out there.
You could also call other local schools and see what they have running, talk to their tech people and ask for help/advice.
Good Luck

Talk to the school board, they likely have policies and procedures to help you get up to speed. They can probably recommend site blocking and monitoring software, too.
