For the longest they thought the story of Troy was just a war story in others what we call today fiction. They didn't think Troy ever existed that it was just a fictional city..
That has been disspelled because recently they have discovered the ruins of Troy.
They have also discovered that the race of amazons fought on Troy's side and was captured by the Greeks.
Until then I thought the amazons to be myth as well. But they have discovered the decendents of the amazons recently as well using DNA for Amazon burial sites.
Whether or not Helen was the cause of the war or not is still up for speculation. Or whether the Greeks wanted to control the shipping and commence was what caused the Greeks to attack Troy is also still up for speculation.

The 'Iliad' was a story written a few years later, about the Trojan War, especially its heroes, and contains gods and myths like the snakes sent by the god to kill the prophet Laocoon.
The site of ancient Troy is still a matter for educated guesses by modern historians and archaeologists. The war itself certainly took place, but from less romantic reasons than given by Homer.
