Because science teaches us to believe in what we can see, touch, smell or hear. Otherwise, the thing does not exist. Unfortunately, every thing can not be proved. There are experiences of the inner nature, faiths, sayings of great souls before us for which there is no proof. Even many of teh scientific theories are based on beleifs, that is some one has done this experiment etc. Have you seen him doing the experiment yourself. You believe his scriptures, but don't beleive the scriptures of our great religeous teachers.

God, if he does exist, apparently does not fit in a criteria. That is why there are those who don't believe in him.

Personally, when I say God now, I refer to the "ultimate good" where by everything else is measured. I don't think of a personification. I don't think of something that fits a definition, or that has characteristics other than utter perfection. If it falls under a criteria then it is limited and isn't worthy of worship.

Though, I think, there are many reasons - I will list only a few.

1. they think they are the center of the universe. the ruler of their own destiny.

2. The idea of an entity in the sky watching over us, is hard to swallow.

3. Religious zealots bastardize the true message of god's love and when they see that, they ask, "why would i want to worship that?"

4. They are scared to give themselves over to something bigger, more powerful and wiser than themselves.

5. They are not sure how to believe.

I am christian so maybe it is best to get soem answers from non believers. These are only my thoughts. I think # 2 & 3 are at the heart of the problem though.

because they dont want to! Lon't know if u heard that story of a believer who goes at the barber where the last arguments the god does not exist just: God wouldn't let all the poverty, murders and bad things to happen. Then the believer points him a barker at the street, with long hair and being unshaved: "Does this mean that barbers do not exist? No my dear, it's just that the barker doesn't visit you!!!"

God has finished His works of revealing His love for mankind. Right now He is allowing people to make their own decision to seek Him and invite Him into their hearts. To blame God for the actions of man and, in so doing, use that as a reason to deny Him is a personal choice. No one is born a believer. A believer believes by faith, a non-believer, even if he/she needs proof or just has no hunger in their heart and soul to seek Him has nothing to lose by simply saying "God, if you really exist and are who you say you are, then I challenge you to open my eyes and heart to receive you". Non-believers have nothing to lose if God does not exist, do they? But much to gain if they accept Him and He does.

I used to believe in a higher being, however, the evidence just didn't add up. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties

7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.

8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.

9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.

10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods)

In reality, there is no sentient, omnipresent, omnipotent supernatural being, supernatural entity or force....therefore all the inequities and misery of the world will always persist, some will have good things happen to them and some not, some will blame the invisible entity but objective reality wins all the time....no matter how hard some try to get that limbic brain of theirs to work...sorry

And why does bad things happen to good people all the time? When the tectonic plates crash into each other causing human calamity, they don't worry about Karma, good and bad, evil and riteousness. Life's paths are made up of random circumstances, some predictable and some not. Most religious people will state that god has a 'bigger' plan for them and humans in general, that we can't know the 'big picture.' Most say there can't be good unless we know or experience the depths of evil.

Is it fair to have predation, disease, deformities, child rape, parasites and evil in the world? If the answer is yes, then with god(s) like that, who need them?

why are there still people who do
Most of Mans questions have been answered by now ,
if one is open to the truth

but the religious people have blinkers on that prevent them this luxury.

They cannot accept that others from other planets came here and colonized the place and ,created slaves to start the ball rolling ,

Even though the planet is littered with evidences
but those of the original power devised long lasting methods for control that still operate today.

I think that the reasons people don't believe in god are because; bad things happen to people e.g. disease, poverty, famin crime etc.
Also god can not be scientifically proven to exist (the same reason people do not believe in ghosts or aliens).

These are the two main reasons that i think that people do not believe that god exists. There are probably several others but these will be the two main reasons.

Ultimately surely for the same reasons there are people who believe in god?

Justifiable true belief and little else.

Because to a thiest (as Freud argued) - "Religious ideals [fulfil] the oldest, strongest and most urgent wishes of mankind". It makes sense for a christian to believe in God, because that belief in itself makes sense according to what principles they have.

To an athiest (rule of thumb) - the concept of a God is illogical, irrational, no founded proof nor reason to it, because ultimately they cannot justify the belief in God according to their own beliefs.

People only believe what they need and what suits them at that time of their lives in that aspect.

Afterall, why do we believe the things we believe in? Because it makes sense to us in our minds. Little other reason for it at the end of the day.

'Course that's just my opinion ;)

Question: Have you ever heard the arguement "We are God and we are the devil"? What does that mean to you? Does it make sense to you? Why?

Toodles
