3 England, Scotland, Wales
Thumbs down - It's a fact. The questioner is asking about GB not the UK.

The formal title for the country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So, technically the question cannot be answered as there is no legal entity known as 'Britain'. It is questionable whether that expression actually covers the whole island. Read the introduction to Norman Davies' book 'The Isles' for a full discussion of the problem of nomenclature. Great Britain includes Scotland, Wales and England, and this term came into existence following the Act of Union in 1707. The term UKofGBandNI does not include outlying islands which are merely Crown dependancies with there own taxation etc, systems. They are not part of the EU either.

Okay, there are three answers here. The geographical definition of 'Great Britain' includes 3 countries: England, Scotland and Wales. The Political country of 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' contains 4 countries (the clue to the 4th being in the title!!!!). The geographical definition of The British Isles consists of 5 countries, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Irish republic (Eire, or more usually now, simply Ireland). Hope this clarifies a lot of the confusing answers above.

There are three countries which make up Great Britain - England, Scotland and Wales.
The confusion arises with Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, but not Great Britain - Have a look at your British passport if you have one. The front cover states "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
Britannia (as in 'Rule Britannia') is the old name for the island which comprises England, Scotland and Wales.

its 4 , if you mean the united kingdom
SCOTLAND , ENGLAND , WALES AND NORTHERN IRELAND
i put scotland first because i live there , most people will put england first if you ask them this question , as england is the biggest of them
but mainland britain , is scotland england and wales
as northern ireland is on the same island as southern ireland , but is still part of the united kingdom
all the best
