it was a bad joke.
if i put myself in anothers shoe, i'd laugh about it & shrug it off.
however, since i am Filipino, i have to admit that it was hurtful(especially for med practitioners) & i somehow felt hurt towards the dialogue.
however, in this situation, let us stay calm. anger nor rage will take us nowhere. we hated the fact that we were thrown racist slurs on a worldwide program, but should we do the same? we know better than that.
there is a petition to sign if you want a public apology. no need for profanity : )
YAPpers, kalma lang : )

The video is totally completely WRONG! How could a well civilized county like the USA even afford to have writers having a show with racist statements and discrimination against other countries? For me, that is not right. It just shows that with their great power and authority they would forget that we, Filipinos also have rights. They belittle Filipino doctors and nurses. I absolutely disagree to this because as far as I know, Filipinos in the field of medicine are studying with the exposition of the latest technology. Examples of good doctors are ones from St. Luke's Medical Center....
That would be just so rude though it is just a statement. Even if they said it was just a joke or sarcasm etc.. it would really affect Filipinos........
The writers should apologize to the Filipinos. This is a great discrimination especially to our doctors.....
Americans have a high form of education yet they condone this? They should know better because it will destroy the reputation of our doctors here! They should not tolerate such outrageous acts!
What an insane episode! Poor Judgement!

I do not watch that show, but did click on the link you had and read what was said. I think that it terrible and is definately a cut on Filipinos. Sadly, writers of these shows do not think of the wide audience the show is going out to. There are racial slurs on shows all of the time and most people don't catch them. I agree with you in that it was completely, without a doubt wrong.

First of all I'm Filipino, I'm not looking at this as an attack to our ethnicity rather a WAKE UP CALL , in a way its true because you can actually buy diplomas, birth certificate, marriage certificate... need I say more? you can almost get anything in Quiapo/Recto so what are you complaining about, Yes Filipinos are the most hard working people, especially in the US they are respected big time there. Don't be over sensitive, yes it hurts but did you ask your self about this? Have ever you thought of a way to solve this problem so that people will not focus too much on the negative side of the Filipinos? Take it in a constructive way, because whining about it will not do anything about it.

I think this is the 3rd or the 4th time am seing this subject matter raised at YAP. So, we signs petitions, counter with local shows, raise our fury to the heavens until we turn hoarse in the throat... And the best that can hapen, if any, is that they give a scriptwriter the boot, or if we're not that lucky, a simple reprimand. The show goes on. It's show business.
Ever see this doctor, in the series "House"? This eminent neurosurgeon of the tv series would call every patient incestous, find ticks in their reproductive organs by every illegal trick there is, or stand aside while someone jerks about the floor having a seizure, because he needs to place his bet on the horse race...
Are American viewers complaining on this character? Or, they love him? This is show business for you. The Great American dream. Take it or leave it.

The statement implies that filipinos are not as good doctors, therefore it is a racist statement.
But I am not "insulted."
One, the character was supposed to be upset. You wouldn't expect an upset person to say politically correct things, would you?
Two, the show aims for realism I think. And it is part of reality that Americans would think Filipinos, or Burmese, or Vietnamese whatever would not be as well trained as they are. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, I'm just calling it as it is.
Three, this is mild, compared to what I've heard Americans say about poles, or jews, or blondes, or fellow americans.

If the lines in the said episode is the concept of the writers of the show, then, it should be them who should first apologize to the whole Filipinos for such a racist statement. Then, the producer/s and directors and lastly, Teri Hatcher for condoning such a downgrading statement. It is not an excuse that because it is in the script, she should read it as it is. She has a mind of her own, doesn't she? She can definitely question it's being derogatory and can, therefore, refuse to being a party to it unless, of course, her brain is as small as a mongo bean. If the writers' intention was to be comical, it was done in poor taste. It was done to besmirch the reputation of Filipino doctors in general. I protest!

I am not a Filipino, I do not think that this is racist at all. I do think it's funny and maybe a little insulting to the Filipino's but come on don't you guys make the same sort of jokes on your shows.
We had a Filipina actress/singer do a show here in Australia, this week. During her talk session she made fun of the Aussie accent was this racist, heck no, was it funny sure was.
It's a pity that Filipino's can't get this agitated about the political scene in their country.
edit
Are fake Diplomas, certificates etc. obtainable for a fee in the Philippines. If, as I think, they are then maybe this is what the show is having a go at. And , if this is so, shouldn't all this indignation be aimed at this situation.

I remember answering a similar Q a couple days ago. But I did not give outright remarks as I have not checked the sources yet.
I have just viewed the clip on youtube. It is definitely uncalled-for. And it has outraged me as a Filipino. We should demand a public apology from the actress Teri Hatcher and from the network ABC.

note: there is a similar question on yahoo answers culture and groups.
its not only unfair, its evil racist irresponsible stupid mindless idiotic cruel hateful and not even funny dialogue for the scene.
coming from a girl who said she was sexually abused as a child, she doesn't seem to care to hurt other people and needlessly at that for an idiotic scene.
does anybody know who is the episode writer and the director? they deserve as much exposure on this.
philippine doctors represent the best of our professionals that go abroad and they don't deserve an insult like that.
almost everyone is aware how difficult it is for filipinos to go to the US and to further imply that fake filipino doctors can even manage to get work in american hospitals without anybody noticing, not the immigration authorities and not the hospital authorities , is sure sign of the ignorance and stupidity of the highest level of the people of this desperate tv show.
